BOHS P403 Air sampling and Fibre Counting (PCM)

The BOHS P403 course provides candidates with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively conduct air sampling and fibre counting for asbestos using phase contrast microscopy.

Prior to attending this course, candidates are expected to have awareness of HSG 248 Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide (July 2021), particularly Appendix 1, which covers sampling and evaluation of fibres by phase contrast microscopy.

Ideally, candidates should have prior experience in analysing fibre count samples and may already be involved in a quality control scheme. Additionally, candidates are expected to have received training that covers the core competencies outlined in the foundation material specified in Table A9.1 of HSG 248 Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide (July 2021). This training can be achieved through in-house learning or by completing the P400 foundation module.

Please note: It is required to bring a phase contrast microscope to the course. Alternatively, microscopes can be rented from us at £50 + VAT per candidate.

• Setting up air sampling equipment and effectively collecting samples
• Mounting and clarifying the filter on a microscope slide
• Setting up the microscope and performing necessary quality checks
• Analysing samples accurately and providing precise fibre counts.
