When Is Air Monitoring Required?

Asbestos air monitoring measures the concentration of airborne fibres within a defined location. It can be used to assess conditions before work begins, evaluate the effectiveness of control measures during asbestos removal, and provide evidence that an area is suitable for reoccupation following completion.

Air monitoring may also be appropriate following accidental disturbance, damage to an asbestos-containing material.

G&L Consultancy provides independent air monitoring and fibre counting through experienced analysts working under our UKAS accreditation. Our services support compliance with applicable Irish legislation, EU requirements and recognised technical guidance.

Directive (EU) 2023/2668 introduced strengthened requirements for protecting workers from asbestos exposure, including lower occupational exposure limits and enhanced expectations for exposure assessment and measurement.

Who We support:

We provide air monitoring for:

  • Domestic properties requiring reassurance testing
  • Asbestos contractors undertaking removal work
  • Commercial, industrial and public-sector premises
  • Short-duration visits and long-term projects

Every assignment includes accurate sampling, clear reporting, prompt results and practical technical guidance where required.

We offer several types of air monitoring, including:

  • Background monitoring
  • Leak monitoring
  • Reassurance monitoring
  • Four-stage clearance monitoring
  • Personal monitoring

Our Air Monitoring Services

Background Monitoring

Background Monitoring is undertaken before asbestos work begins to establish the existing airborne fibre concentration within or around the work area.

The results provide a useful baseline against which subsequent leak, reassurance or clearance monitoring can be assessed.

Leak Monitoring

Leak Monitoring is undertaken outside an asbestos work enclosure while removal work is in progress.  It assesses the effectiveness of the enclosure and associated control measures. An elevated result can provide an early indication of fibre release, allowing the cause to be investigated and corrective action taken promptly.

Reassurance Monitoring

Reassurance monitoring may be appropriate:

  • Following dismantling of an asbestos enclosure
  • After accidental disturbance or damage of asbestos
  • Following a suspected enclosure breach
  • Before an affected area is returned to normal use

The results provide evidence of airborne fibre concentrations at the time and location of sampling.

Personal Monitoring

Personal monitoring measures airborne fibre concentrations within an operative’s breathing zone using a portable sampling pump.

The results can be used to assess personal exposure, evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory protection and working methods, and support the review of control measures.

Four-Stage Clearance Monitoring / Certificate of Reoccupation

Four-stage clearance is undertaken following asbestos removal within an enclosure to determine whether the area is suitable for reoccupation.

The process comprises:

  1. A preliminary assessment of site condition and job completeness
  2. A thorough visual inspection inside the enclosure
  3. Clearance air monitoring
  4. A final assessment following removal of the enclosure

G&L provides independent four-stage clearance inspections and certification through experienced analysts working under our UKAS accreditation.

Fibre Counting

Our mobile laboratories enable fibre counting to be completed on site immediately after air sampling, providing prompt results and allowing any necessary action to be taken without unnecessary delay.

Reports are produced electronically and include supporting colour photographs and site plan.  They can be issued from site, helping clients maintain accurate records and make timely decisions.

Where more detailed fibre identification is required, G&L can also arrange analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) or Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

Alternative fibre analysis procedures such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) or Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) can also be organised by G&L at your request.
