G&L Consultancy, the asbestos specialist, welcomes the British Drilling Association’s (BDA) decision to announce a significant update to its audit requirements. According to the BDA’s press release, starting on 1st October 2024, it will be mandatory for all auditees undergoing a BDA audit to have completed Asbestos Awareness Training. We share a commitment to safety and compliance, and BDA’s decision will have an invaluable impact on auditees.

The press release also indicates that there is potential for 80% to 90% of the United Kingdom’s brownfield sites to be contaminated with asbestos (although this data is not explicitly labelled in the BDA’s press release, we believe it is referenced from the Association of Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Specialists). This issue resonates with recent news covered by G&L Consultancy on the Casement Park project in Belfast. The rebuild was delayed due to asbestos contamination and the likely cause of contamination was infilled derelict rubble.

Additionally, despite Asbestos Awareness Refresher Training not being mandatory by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the BDA recommends that its members receive regular updates to maintain knowledge. G&L Consultancy views this as a crucial step in continuing to educate people about risks and how to mitigate the dangers posed by asbestos. Continuous awareness training is essential, as incorrect handling or exposure can release asbestos fibres, which can lead to asbestosis and increase the risk of lung cancer.

If you require Asbestos Awareness Training, we offer online and in-person sessions designed for anyone who may be at risk of exposure. We take pride in providing engaging and informative sessions, with nearly 9,000 people having attended our courses. Our Asbestos Awareness Training is certified by CPD, IATP, and CITB industry bodies.

Successful completion of this course will provide a level of awareness to reduce the risk posed by asbestos. Please note that completion of this course does not provide any training on how to work with or remove asbestos.

The usual cost is £90+VAT per person, and discounts are available for bulk bookings of 8 or more delegates. Private bookings at your location are also an option.

Don’t delay—take action so that you and your employees are fully aware of the risks posed by asbestos and how to mitigate them.
