Non-licensed Work with Asbestos Refresher

Our Non-Licensed Work with Asbestos Refresher course provides a comprehensive review of knowledge and practical skills for individuals working with or knowingly working on non-licensed asbestos-containing materials. This training aligns with the requirements outlined in CAR2012 Regulation 3(2) and HSG210 Asbestos Essentials. The course covers various tasks, including drilling through textured coated ceilings, removal of asbestos cement roof sheets, and vinyl floor tiles.

Key topics covered in this refresher course include understanding the dangers of asbestos, different types of asbestos and their uses, relevant asbestos legislation, safe practices for working with non-licensed asbestos-containing materials such as asbestos cement, textured coating, and minor work with asbestos insulating board. Additionally, the course emphasizes the appropriate management of asbestos waste and the proper removal and replacement of asbestos-containing materials.

By refreshing their knowledge and skills through this course, individuals ensure that they stay up to date with best practices and regulatory requirements when working with non-licensed asbestos-containing materials. This helps maintain a safe working environment and minimizes the risks associated with asbestos exposure.

The Subjects are covered  depending on training needs are:

  • Why is asbestos dangerous?
  • Types of asbestos and their uses (including the materials in which they are found)
  • Asbestos legislation
  • Working with non-licensed asbestos-containing materials, such as asbestos cement, textured coating and minor work with asbestos insulating board
  • Appropriate management of asbestos waste
  • Removal and replacement of asbestos-containing materials

Course information

Outline of Course Content

This course provides the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to persons who will knowingly disturb asbestos containing materials during the course of their work activities, including building maintenance workers and supervisory personnel, and building maintenance managers. Successful completion of the course will allow candidates to undertake asbestos non licensed works in accordance with the Control of Asbestos regulations 2012 and all associated Codes of practice

Training is in accordance with Regulation 10 of Work with materials containing asbestos, Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, Approved Code of Practice and guidance (L143) and Equipment and Methods Sheet EM2 of Asbestos essentials: A task manual for building, maintenance and allied trades on non-licensed asbestos work (Second edition) (HSG210)

Outline of Proposed Learning Activities / Approach to Delivery

The training will cover the topics in appropriate detail, by means of both written and oral presentation, and by demonstration as necessary.

Practical Training

The term practical in this context means hands-on training where delegates practice going through procedures, usually in a simulated environment. For example:

  • carrying out decontamination procedures as detailed in EM8
  • trying out RPE to ensure a good face-fit and knowing how to carry out maintenance checks;
  • use of wetting techniques and H-type Vacuums;
  • construction of a mini enclosure (optional);
  • bagging of waste.

Outline of Resources / Bibliography (as appropriate)

  • Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
  • Asbestos: The survey guide (HSG264)
  • Asbestos essentials: A task manual for building, maintenance and allied trades on non-licensed asbestos work (HSG210)

Assessment Methods / Tasks

A question and answer session will be held at the end of each module to ensure each learner has reached the necessary level of understanding.

Tutor assessment of learner performance during practical sessions with continual oral feedback.

A timed, invigilated, closed-book written examination will be individually completed by each learner at the end of the course, with 80% being the pass mark.

The end of course written paper will draw at least 25 short answer and multiple-choice questions from a module-based question bank, to include no less than two questions from each module.

Completed exam papers are retained by the course provider

Assessment Evidence

Written Assessment covering LO1-LO11

Grade Descriptors

80% pass mark (pass / fail)

Learner : Trainer Ratio

Maximum of 15:1

Course Length

The length of this face to face course is dependent on the training needs analysis of the learner(s) but it is generally expected that a minimum of 0.5 days (3 hours excluding breaks) is acceptable. Shorter duration courses are allowable but this must be robustly supported by the training needs analysis.

Course Prerequisites

The aim of refresher training is to identify good and bad practice and to ensure that the good practice is shared and that bad practices are stopped. Training Needs Analysis will help to make the annual courses more relevant to delegates. Refresher training should aim to achieve the following objectives:

  • fulfil identified training needs;
  • impart new information, eg changes in legislation and work practices (such as use of new equipment or wetting techniques);
  • remind employees of the risks they face working with asbestos;
  • reinforce procedures such as decontamination, use and maintenance of RPE and how to use controlled removal techniques;
  • share good practice and eliminate bad practice.

This unit has eleven learning outcomes.
