Julie Lewis
Managing Director
Main Duties: Julie wears many hats as the Managing Director. She is responsible for directing the management team, implementing and reviewing company systems, procedures, templates, and solving problems. Her dedication and meticulous attention to detail ensure that everything runs smoothly, providing a solid foundation for the company’s success.
Background: Julie has a rich history in the industry, with 8 years of experience working within the asbestos team at Somerset County Council as an air tester, surveyor, and bulk analyst. In 1999, she took a bold step and established G&L Consultancy. Julie’s journey began on the frontline, working on-site carrying out all accredited activities and gradually expanding the various teams.
Years at G&L / in the industry: Julie has been a pivotal part of G&L since she founded it in 1999, making her a veteran with more than two decades of industry experience.

Personal Life: When she’s not steering the G&L ship, you can find Julie gardening, engrossed in DIY projects, or taking long walks with her four pet alpacas. A lesser-known fact about Julie is that she served in the Territorial Army Medical Corp for a decade before embarking on her G&L journey.

Mark Skinner
Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Manager (Somerset Director)
Main Duties: As Somerset Director, Mark has the responsibility for all operations at the Somerset Office and is also responsible for maintaining and continually enhancing G&L’s environmental, occupational health & safety, and quality management systems.
Years at G&L: Mark has been a valuable member of G&L since joining in January 2001.
Highlight of Career So Far: Mark’s notable achievement is successfully designing and implementing various management systems that have greatly contributed to the company’s success.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: For Mark, the best part of being part of the G&L team is simply being part of the team itself. He cannot imagine working anywhere else, emphasising the strong sense of camaraderie and unity within the organisation.
Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: Outside of work, Mark enjoys spending quality time with his family. He also finds pleasure in reading and engaging in wargaming.
A Fact We Don’t Know About You: An interesting fact about Mark is that he won the Gold medal in his age category at the South West Judo Championships in 1990, showcasing his martial arts prowess.
Sally Monger
Finance Director
Main Duties: As Finance Director, Sally oversees all aspects of the company’s finances, from VAT to payroll, across both office locations. In addition to her finance responsibilities, she leads HR functions, including recruitment, contracts, and employee welfare, ensuring any concerns are addressed promptly and effectively.
Years at G&L / in Industry / Similar Role: Sally’s commitment to G&L spans an impressive 19 years, having joined the company in October 2004. Her extensive experience in the industry, particularly in finance management, makes her an asset to the team.
Highlight of Career So Far: Sally cherishes her entire career at G&L, and her dedication to the company stands out as a noteworthy accomplishment. Throughout her tenure, she has consistently contributed to the smooth financial operations and welfare of the employees.

James Ooyman
Compliance Manager (Deputy Director)
Main Duties: As Compliance Manager, James is G&L’s most client-facing team member, with a primary focus on client relations. He manages all key managed-site clients, maintaining regular contact to ensure their asbestos needs are fully met. James takes the time to clearly explain management plans and regulatory requirements, helping clients maintain safe, compliant sites. He conducts annual site reviews with clients to ensures ongoing compliance. Dedicated to client care, James is always ready to listen, provide guidance, and address any concerns.
Years at G&L / in the Industry / Similar Role: James joined G&L in 2005 as a trainee asbestos surveyor having worked previously as a building surveyor.
Highlight of Career So Far: James highlighted many years ago that asbestos management is not just about a one-off survey, but the ongoing assessment and review of asbestos, with reinspections and management plans. James was the driving force behind G&L’s reinspection and management plan services, so clients were not just told what to do, but educated so they had the tools to actively manage the asbestos on their sites.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: James is thankful for such a lovely team of staff that are committed, and also good friends.
Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: Anyone who has worked with James will know that he spends a lot of time with his beloved cockapoo Bobby, generally out cycling with Bobby sat in his rucksack on his back. James also likes to spend time with his daughter, redesigning his garden or at his local gym doing circuits and kickboxing.
A Fact We Don’t Know About You: James spends most of his weekends at weddings and social events, helping run a fun casino and photobooth.
Jason Monger
Operations Manager (Deputy Director)
Main Duties: As Operations Manager, Jason plays a key role in overseeing G&L’s site teams including surveying, reinspection’s, asbestos removals and air testing. Jason focuses a lot of his time on quoting, pricing, planning, and scheduling work, also working closely with clients to define survey and remediation scopes and organise site consultancy and air testing.
Years at G&L / Industry Experience: Since joining G&L in 2012, Jason has built extensive experience within the business. Starting as a trainee in the air testing department, he then developed strong first-hand knowledge over the years, which he now brings to his key operational role. He has also been an experienced trainer during his time at G&L, teaching all industry-based courses including the P400 modules to clients and staff.
Highlights of Career So Far: Jason has completed countless large and complex projects of the years. One highlight for him was being was the lead consultant for a challenging two-year-long project involving the removal of a 4000m2 roof with an asbestos sprayed coating. The successful completion of this project required meticulous planning and execution within a working enclosure. Then earning his promotion within G&L stands was another significant achievement in his career. Since then, he has managed both the air testing and removals teams, significantly growing both department’s staff levels and client bases.

This trust underscores the collaborative and professional environment we work in. I am incredibly proud of what we have built and continue to do so”.
Hobbies / Time Spent at Home: Outside of work, Jason enjoys spending time with his partner, Kim, his daughter, Poppy, and his energetic Jack Russell. They often embark on long walks, exploring new places. Jason has recently taken up golf, the one hobby he never thought he would, and whilst he is completely useless, he’s really enjoying it.
A Fact We Don’t Know About You: Prior to his career in the asbestos industry, Jason spent a significant amount of time in sports coaching. He volunteered for 12 years at a local youth team and even completed a season coaching football in Philadelphia, USA.
Abby Cartwright
Laboratory & Training Manager (SW England)
Main Duties: As Laboratory and Training Manager, Abby oversees all aspects of sample analysis, including booking, analysis, reporting, service agreements and client communication. She manages bulk sample invoicing, coordinates with surveyors, and provides support to the surveying team. Abby prioritises daily workloads, resolves analyst issues, and ensures that equipment and consumables are available and correctly calibrated. She also supports the smooth running of the training department and delivers courses at our Somerset Training Centre.
Years at G&L / in the industry / similar role: Abby joined G&L in November 2018 as a trainee analyst after completing her degree in Biological Sciences. She quickly progressed to become the Laboratory Supervisor in May 2019. Before joining G&L, she briefly worked in a microbiology lab.
Highlight of Career So Far: Abby takes pride in her role as a mentor and trainer. She has successfully helped six individuals pass their P401 exams on their first attempt, highlighting her dedication to supporting her colleagues’ professional growth.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: Abby appreciates the exceptional team dynamic at G&L. From the laboratory to the entire company, she finds her colleagues to be not only hardworking but also great fun to work with. The weekly lab polls always bring entertaining moments.
Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: Outside of work, Abby enjoys following football as a passionate Aston Villa fan. She watches football matches regularly and tries to attend games whenever possible. Abby is also a music enthusiast and makes it a point to attend festivals each year.

Siobhan Barsby
Projects Lead (SW England)
Main Duties: As Projects Lead, Siobhan oversees all quotes and bookings for surveys and reinspections. She manages frontline enquiries, surveyors’ diaries, route planning, and client and tenant communications to schedule work efficiently. Known as the team’s morale booster, Siobhan brings positivity and energy to every project, ensuring smooth operations and a motivated workplace.
Years at G&L / in industry / similar role: Siobhan celebrated her 4-year anniversary at G&L in May, marking a significant milestone in her journey with the company. Prior to joining G&L, she spent 15 years in the finance industry, bringing a wealth of experience to her current role.
Highlight of Career So Far: Siobhan’s career has had its fair share of highlights. She was the number one salesperson in Santander for the UK three years in a row, earning trips to Madrid, Portugal, and the Grand Prix.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: For Siobhan, the best thing about being part of the G&L team is the strong sense of family and the absence of negative vibes. Everyone is always willing to help one another, even if they can’t directly assist. The team enjoys great banter and fosters a supportive and uplifting work environment.
Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: Outside of work, Siobhan (Shivs) enjoys participating in quizzes, seeking out new roller coasters and being in her pyjamas by 6pm! These activities provide her with relaxation, fun, and the thrill of new experiences.
A Fact We Don’t Know About You: An interesting fact about Siobhan is that she had the opportunity to sing for King Charles (when he was a Prince) at the Millennium Dome. Additionally, she has traveled on Concorde from the UK to New York, and in 2001, she was the British Tae-Kwon-Do champion for ladies over 5ft 8.
Kim Woodruff
Admin Officer (SW England)
Main Responsibilities: Kim’s main duties revolve around managing air monitoring bookings. She efficiently handles booking requests from our valued clients and site contractors, overseeing the diary to ensure seamless scheduling and then sending the final reports.
Kim also takes care of booking courses for our clients, ensuring they have the necessary resources to enhance their skills and knowledge. Kim then produces all the identification cards and certificates, ensuring all training participants receive the recognition they deserve.
When she’s not managing bookings and training, Kim takes on reception duties, warmly welcoming visitors and answering phone calls with professionalism and a friendly demeanor. Her exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail make her a valuable team member.

Highlight of Career So Far: One of the highlights of Kim’s career so far has been the opportunity to meet celebrities. Prior to joining G&L, she had the privilege of encountering renowned personalities such as Peter & Emily Andre, Sophie Ellis Bexter, and Kevin Bridges.

Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: Outside of work, Kim loves indulging in holidays and getaways, allowing her to recharge and explore new places. Socialising and spending quality time with her grown-up children are also top priorities for her.

While these roles may not have always been popular, they have given Kim valuable insights and a unique perspective that she brings to her current position.
Penny Hartnell
Operations Officer (SW England)
Main Duties: As the Operations Officer, Penny handles removals, reinspection, and management plan bookings. Her role involves coordinating and managing these crucial aspects to ensure smooth and efficient operations for G&L. Penny’s attention to detail and organisational skills contribute to the seamless execution of these tasks.
Years at G&L: Penny has been a valued member of the G&L team for 8 months since joining in August 22. Her dedication and commitment have quickly made a positive impact on the organisation.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: For Penny, the best thing about being part of the G&L team is the incredible people she works with and the dynamic nature of her role. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities, allowing her to continuously grow and learn within the supportive team environment.
Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: Outside of work, Penny is a keen runner who has completed three half marathons. One of her favorite races was the London landmarks half, where she ran for dementia UK and raised nearly £1,000 for the charity. Her dedication to fitness and supporting meaningful causes shines through her active lifestyle.
A Fact We Don’t Know About You: A lesser-known fact about Penny is that she is a qualified personal trainer. Her passion for fitness and helping others reach their health goals led her to pursue this qualification.
Diana Saltmeriene
Finance Assistant (SW England)
Main Responsibilities: Diana joined G&L in June 2024 as a Finance Assistant and has quickly become a valued member of the team and a respected colleague. Diana works closely with Sally, dealing with sales and purchase invoices, sending statements, and managing the companies time-keeping system.
Highlight of Career So Far: Diana, originally from Lithuania, has enjoyed her career journey in the UK so far. She has showcased her expertise in various roles, starting as a Guest Caterer at Butlins and progressing to finance-related positions. Before joining G&L, Diana spent ten years as a Senior Payroll Support worker. Despite her short time with the company, she already considers G&L a highlight of her career.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: Diana believes the best part of being on the G&L team is the chance to work with an incredible group of people who are always willing to help. This support makes her feel she is never alone when tackling challenges.
Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: During Diana’s personal time, she enjoys spending time with her family as much as possible and exploring new and exciting places! Diana is also an avid boardgame player!

Jordan Baker
Trainer/Asbestos Consultant (SW England)
Main Responsibilities: Jordan has been with the G&L family for four years. He started as an air test analyst, but now you’ll mostly find him at HQ, leading training sessions for clients. Occasionally, Jordan is also utilised in the removals department. Thanks to his real-world experiences of working with asbestos, he’s an extremely knowledgeable trainer already.
Highlight of Career So Far: Jordan feels very fortunate to have worked in various positions at G&L, allowing him to showcase his versatile skillset. However, if he had to pick one highlight from his time at G&L, it would be riding a helicopter over to the Isles of Scilly to carry out some air testing work.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: Like other G&L members, Jordan believes the best part of being on their team is the work ethic. Everyone works extremely hard to ensure top-notch service, but it’s always enjoyable and never dull.
Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: Outside of work, Jordan enjoys quality time with his children and partner. His eldest, who is three, likes watching rugby and attending dance classes. When he gets a moment to himself, you’ll find Jordan at the driving range, playing golf with his friends.
A Fact We Don’t Know About You: From the age of 12, Jordan represented England and the United Kingdom in clay pigeon shooting. His commitment and hard work continue to show several years later in his roles at G&L.
Alan Lewis
Northern Ireland Director
Main Duties: As the Northern Ireland Director, Alan is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Northern Ireland office. His leadership and management skills ensure smooth operations and efficient delivery of services to clients.
Years at G&L / in the industry / similar role: Alan has been an integral part of G&L since joining in March 2000, shortly after its inception. With extensive experience in the industry and similar roles, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his position.
Highlight of Career So Far: Setting up a permanent office in Northern Ireland stands out as a significant accomplishment in Alan’s career. Alan moved to Northern Ireland in 2004, with his wife Karen Lewis, with a view to setting up an office from scratch. Working with a great team of people has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience, contributing to his professional growth and the success of G&L.

John McAleenan
Deputy Branch Manager (Northern Ireland)
Main Duties: As the Deputy Branch Manager for Northern Ireland, John’s primary responsibility is to ensure the efficient and productive functioning of both the air monitoring and surveying departments. He dedicates his time to developing the skill sets of the staff, providing training to enable them to deliver surveys of the highest profile and quality.
Years at G&L / Industry Experience / Similar Role: John joined G&L in 2007 as a surveyor, initially working on Housing Executive contracts. Over the years, he honed his expertise, progressing to conduct high-profile surveys. In 2012, John ventured to Brisbane, Australia, where he made significant contributions to the industry by training local staff to meet UKAS standards in surveying. He later transitioned to the Analytical division, performing comprehensive clearances on various industrial and commercial properties and obtaining his Asbestos Assessors License. In 2012, he returned to G&L, focusing on the development of the surveying and Air Monitoring teams.
Highlight of Career So Far: One of John’s notable achievements was delivering surveying services for Van-Oord on large dredging vessels at sea. He had the unique opportunity to travel to and from the vessels by helicopter, showcasing his expertise in challenging and dynamic environments.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: John finds immense joy in being part of the G&L team, primarily due to the strong spirit, support, and camaraderie shared among the team members. Working with like-minded individuals who strike the perfect balance between passion for their work and enjoyment within the industry is truly rewarding for him. John highly appreciates the team’s commitment to upholding high standards of operation and delivering excellence to clients.
Hobbies / Personal Interests: Outside of work, John prioritises spending quality time with his family. He maintains an active lifestyle by regularly attending the gym and indulging in hobbies such as hiking and cold-water sea dips. Additionally, he finds relaxation and enjoyment in video gaming.

Karen Lewis
Business Development & Personnel Manager (Northern Ireland)
Main Responsibilities: Karen takes care of day-to-day personnel matters at our Northern Ireland (NI) office, ensuring smooth operations. She actively engages with clients, focusing on business development through bid writing and tender management.
Years at G&L / Industry Experience / Similar Roles: With a remarkable 18 years at G&L and prior experience in audit and quality roles within local and central government, Karen brings extensive knowledge and expertise to her role.
Highlight of Career So Far: Karen’s notable achievement includes overseeing the development of our current office building, from site acquisition and planning to establishing it as a welcoming workspace for the NI team.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: For Karen, it’s all about the people who make up the team. She enjoys getting to know individuals, witnessing their growth, and supporting them in acquiring new skills and gaining confidence in their roles.
Hobby / What You Spend Your Time on at Home: Outside of work, Karen’s passion lies in triathlons, and everything related to it. As a qualified triathlon coach and a Triathlon Ireland ‘Beyond the Finish Line’ Advocate for Women in Sport, she actively promotes triathlons and encourages women to take on leadership roles. Additionally, Karen cherishes her roles as a parent and a wife.
A Fact We Don’t Know About You: In 1997, during a solo trip to Australia that lasted a year, Karen had a chance encounter with her now-husband, Alan Lewis, within a few hours of arriving in the country.
Colin Webb
Laboratory Manager (Northern Ireland)
Main Duties: As the Northern Ireland Laboratory Manager, Colin is responsible for sample analysis, the day-to-day operations of the lab, and calibration of lab and site equipment. His expertise and attention to detail ensure accurate and efficient testing processes, contributing to the overall success of the company.
Years at G&L / in the industry: Colin has been an integral part of G&L since joining as a trainee analyst in July 2011. With his extensive experience, he excels in managing the lab and overseeing various analytical tasks. His dedication to maintaining high standards in sample analysis is highly valued within the company. His longevity in the industry has honed his skills and deepened his knowledge in asbestos analysis.

Stephen Comiskey
Trainer/Asbestos Consultant (Northern Ireland)
Main Duties: Stephen plays a pivotal role as an Asbestos Consultant/Trainer at G&L. His responsibilities include delivering training sessions, fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE), conducting analytical works, and performing air testing.
Years at G&L / in Industry / Similar Role: Stephen has been a valued member of the G&L team for over 6 years since March 2017, contributing his expertise and knowledge to the field. His experience in the industry makes him an asset to the company.
Highlight of Career So Far: Stephen’s career highlight thus far is successfully passing the NEBOSH construction qualification. This accomplishment showcases his dedication to professional development and expertise in the field.
Best Thing About Being Part of the G&L Team: Stephen’s favourite aspect of being part of the G&L team is the opportunity to work with a group of cool and like-minded individuals. The camaraderie and collaboration among colleagues make the work environment enjoyable and fulfilling.

Ciara Quinn
Training Coordinator (Northern Ireland)
Main Duties: As the Training Coordinator at G&L, Ciara is responsible for scheduling training dates, liaising with clients, creating client quotes and invoices, conducting face fit testing, and handling all administrative duties as required.
Years at G&L / in Industry / Similar Role: Ciara has been a valuable member of the G&L team since she joined in December 2021. With 17 years of previous office and administrative experience, she brings a wealth of expertise to her role.

Sarah Steele
Senior Operations Officer (Northern Ireland)
Main Duties: Sarah’s key responsibilities include coordinating air monitoring and asbestos removal activities. She ensures seamless coordination between different teams and oversees the smooth execution of these essential tasks.
Years at G&L / in industry / similar role: Sarah has been a valuable member of the G&L team for 6 years, joining the company in August 2017. Her dedication and expertise have contributed to the success of G&L over the years.

Main Duties: As Operations Manager, Jason plays a key role in overseeing G&L’s site teams including surveying, reinspection’s, asbestos removals and air testing. Jason focuses a lot of his time on quoting, pricing, planning, and scheduling work, also working closely with clients to define survey and remediation scopes and organise site consultancy and air testing.
Years at G&L / Industry Experience: Since joining G&L in 2012, Jason has built extensive experience within the business. Starting as a trainee in the air testing department, he then developed strong first-hand knowledge over the years, which he now brings to his key operational role. He has also been an experienced trainer during his time at G&L, teaching all industry-based courses including the P400 modules to clients and staff.
Highlights of Career So Far: Jason has completed countless large and complex projects of the years. One highlight for him was being was the lead consultant for a challenging two-year-long project involving the removal of a 4000m2 roof with an asbestos sprayed coating. Then earning his promotion within G&L stands was another significant achievement in his career. Since then, he has managed both the air testing and removals teams, significantly growing both department’s staff levels and client bases.
