Cutting kitchen worktops containing silica significantly increases the risk of an incurable lung disease called silicosis. According to a BOHS article, modern worktop materials like quartz, which became highly popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, contain up to 90% silica. This poses a serious health risk for those who cut these materials and potentially inhale the silica dust.

Organisations have been raising alarms, noting an increase in younger individuals contracting the disease, as reported by inews. The HSE states that exposure to silica dust can cause lung scarring, reduced lung function, and eventually lung cancer. Additional health issues linked to silica exposure include tuberculosis, kidney disease, arthritis, and heart failure.

The risks are not limited to kitchen fitters; construction workers are also at risk, as bricks can contain up to 30% silica. Despite long-standing awareness of silicosis, the rise in kitchen renovations and the use of materials like quartz and Sensa/Scalea has led to more young people being affected.

The BOHS has issued emergency guidance to mitigate the risks of silicosis. Recommended control measures include water suppression, local exhaust ventilation, and personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face respirators.

G&L Consultancy emphasises the importance of wearing a face respirator. We offer technology to accurately fit respirators to ensure maximum protection. If you work with engineered stone, please implement control measures to protect yourself and others.
