We are delighted to share that Julie Lewis, Managing Director of G&L Consultancy, has been awarded the Long Service Achievement Award at the Annual NORAC (National Organisation of Asbestos Consultants) Conference in Manchester.
This highly respected award recognises individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the asbestos industry through leadership, innovation, and a commitment to best practice. Julie’s recognition is a reflection of her decades-long dedication to raising standards, mentoring professionals, and driving positive change across the sector.
A Career Built on Expertise and Vision
Julie began her career in 1994 as an Asbestos Analyst and quickly developed a strong foundation in quality assurance and UKAS accreditation. By 1997, she had achieved her Certificate of Competence in Asbestos (CCP) and gained in-depth knowledge of ISO17025, LAB30, and key MDHS methodologies.
In 1998, recognising the opportunity presented by evolving asbestos regulations, Julie co-founded G&L Consultancy with Nick Grinter. What began in her spare bedroom in Taunton has since grown into one of the UK’s most respected asbestos consultancies, known for its technical excellence, integrity, and client-first approach.
Setting the Standard for the Industry
G&L Consultancy is widely recognised for operating at the highest standards in the asbestos industry. The company’s internal procedures, auditing frameworks, and quality assurance systems consistently exceed regulatory requirements. This commitment to excellence has earned G&L a reputation for delivering reliable, methodical, and fully compliant services. This often sets the benchmark that others in the industry strive to meet.
Clients trust G&L not only for its technical expertise but also for its unwavering focus on safety, transparency, and long-term value.
A Culture of Loyalty and Development
Julie’s leadership has helped shape a strong, values-driven culture at G&L. The company is proud of its exceptional staff retention, with 17 employees having served for over a decade and eight for more than 20 years. This loyalty is a direct result of the supportive, inclusive environment that Julie has fostered.
Staff development is a core priority. G&L’s structured training programme ensures that employees are cross-skilled and supported throughout their careers. The team currently holds 156 BOHS asbestos-related qualifications, including seven CCPs, reflecting the company’s deep commitment to professional growth and technical excellence.
Innovation and Industry Impact
Julie’s influence extends well beyond G&L. In 2009, she co-developed TEAMS (The Electronic Asbestos Management System) with MarkOne Consultants. Now used by hundreds of organisations across the UK, TEAMS has become a leading platform for managing asbestos & legionella for compliance. G&L continues to contribute to its development through regular feedback and collaboration.
In 2010, G&L became a founding member of the Independent Asbestos Training Providers (IATP), a not-for-profit organisation supporting training providers and asbestos-related charities.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Julie’s leadership also reflects a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. In 2016, G&L achieved ISO 14001 certification and installed solar PV systems at both its head office and Northern Ireland site. In 2020, Julie personally planted over 1,200 trees on her land to support biodiversity and help combat climate change. You can the latest videos of the young forest thriving here.
